In the rare event that Nightline is closed, or if you’re wanting to talk to someone out of term times or opening hours, we can suggest a number of alternative helplines and support services that might be of use to you.

A great place to start for resources is the Wellbeing Information Directory, hosted on the Students’ Guild webpage. The directory can be found here, and has lots of information about helplines as well as university support services.

24/7 National helpline willing to talk through any problems callers may be experiencing.

Helpline specifically dealing with anxiety related disorders, offering support, advice and information. (Calls cost 7p a minute)

BEAT – Eating Disorders

UK’s leading eating disorders charity- helpline provides support and information to those suffering with eating disorders.

Opening Hours: Mon-Fri, 2pm to 4pm.

Brook- Sexual Health

Brook provides free and confidential sexual health advice, pregnancy and contraception to young people. The helpline has been closed but there’s a free texting service on the website (open Mon-Fir, 9am-3pm) and a webchat.

The Sexual Health Line recommended by Brook, provides free, confidential information and advice on sexual health.

Get Connected – Support for under 25’s

‘Get Connected is the UK’s free, confidential helpline service for young people under 25 who need help, but don’t know where to turn.’ A version of Childline for young people, Get Connected deals with everything from mental health to abuse, to sexuality and sexual health. Webchat and email also available.

Papyrus – Suicide Healpine

National charity dedicated to prevention of young suicide. HOPELineUK is a specialist telephone service staffed by trained professionals who give non-judgemental support, practical advice and information to young people up to the age of 35 who are worried about feeling suicidal.

SANELine – Mental Health

SANE runs a national, out of hours mental health helpline offering specialist emotional support and information to anyone affected by mental illness- anxiety, depression through to eating disorders and suicidial thoughts-, including friends, family and carers.

IMAlive – Crisis Intervention

Instant messenger/chat service available 24/7 offering emotional support for people in distress who would rather not call a helpline.

“IMAlive is an online crisis center which is part of the the Hopeline Network, the first online crisis service with 100% of its professionally supervised volunteers trained in crisis intervention. Our goal is to use the Internet to provide crisis intervention to people in crisis online and empower them to take the necessary next steps to address their situation.”
